The Architectural Landscape and Daily Life

Goan village life is visually characterized by a seamless blend of natural landscapes and distinctive domestic design. Narrow, zig-zagging lanes weave between houses built close together, intentionally designed historically without high fences to encourage neighborly interactions across open stone balconies, known locally as balcãos. The older homes are built from dense, red laterite stone and feature bright pastel facades, decorative columns, and window panes made of polished mother-of-pearl.
While modern concrete structures have emerged, traditional habits remain intact. Many homes still utilize ancient, deep wells alongside municipal water, and during harvest times, the open second floors of houses are used to store grain. Life slows down as the midday sun peaks, picking back up in the late afternoon when village breadmakers (poders) ride through the alleys on bicycles, sounding a distinct horn to deliver fresh, warm poi (traditional Goan leavened bread).
